Lavery Library Receives Grant for Special Collections Project
St. John Fisher College’s Lavery Library recently received a grant from the Rochester Regional Library Council in support of a special collections project.
The $4,210.00 grant will help fund “Digitize the Oversize,” a project to digitize scrapbooks and historical newspapers from the Library’s Special Collections and Archives in an effort to make them more widely accessible to the public.
The project includes 20 oversized scrapbooks that chronicle the College’s history, information that is valuable to the current campus community and those who have been part of that history. The information will also be useful to other religious education institutions and higher education researchers.
In addition, the project includes a vast array of newspapers, which the Library hopes will be a good resource for local elementary and high school teachers. The collection includes 111 issues of the Frederick Douglass Paper, seven issues of the Douglass’ Monthly, and 21 issues of the New National Era. It also includes 204 issues of other anti-slavery or abolitionist newspapers.
