Library Services for Faculty

Course Reserves

The Checkout Desk secures and circulates high-priority materials for short time periods, giving each patron an opportunity to use them. Generally, we recommend only required readings be put on reserve. All reserve materials should be brought to the Reserve Desk at least 5 days before students will need them. Materials will be processed in the order they are received.

Please fill out a Reserve Material Cover Sheet [pdf] to be handed in with the material.

Students will need their Fisher ID to check out reserve material. Faculty should retrieve all non-Lavery Library material from their reserves at the end of each semester. Materials may be left on reserve if they are to be used the semester immediately following. Library reserves should not take the place of purchased textbooks or course packs.

The Library adheres to the following copyright guidelines:

  • Copies of consumable copyright material such as workbooks, exercises, standardized tests, and answer books may not be put on Reserve, although the originals may be.
  • Copyright guidelines suggest that up to 10% of any book may be photocopied and put on reserve. If more than 10% is needed, the book itself should be placed on reserve.
  • Photocopied articles may not be placed on reserve for more than one semester without written permission from the copyright owner. The College is registered with the Copyright Clearance Center.

If you are unsure of copyright, please see our copyright page for more information.

For questions regarding Reserve Policies, call the Checkout Desk at (585) 385-8165, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Library Instruction and Training

Faculty are encouraged to bring their classes to the library for instruction in the use of its resources. Introductions to the library are offered to freshmen in their fall Learning Communities and spring CORE 199 classes. More advanced instruction with special subject emphasis is also available. To schedule a class, call the Research Help Desk at (585) 385-8141 or Nancy Greco, Instruction Librarian, at (585) 385-8139.

Each academic department has a liaison librarian, who conducts most of the instruction classes for that department. You may also contact your liaison librarian directly. For a list of current liaison assignments, check out the Who's My Librarian page.

Tours are available for classes or individuals at all levels upon request.

Faculty are welcome to include a liaison librarian as a collaborator in Blackboard: Instructions for bringing your librarian into Blackboard [pdf]

A/V Booking Request

Booking is a service offered by Lavery Library for teaching staff or faculty, where we will obtain AV materials one week prior to the date needed, and hold them at the Checkout desk for staff or faculty to pick up. This ensures that the material will be available when it is needed for instruction purposes. All DVD or VHS materials requested must be currently owned by Lavery Library. Please give us a minimum of one week notification prior to the intended show date. Contact Stacy Celata, Circulation Coordinator, or the on-duty Circulation Supervisor either in person, or at (585) 385-8165.

If you need to place items on reserve for your students to watch out of class, please see "Course Reserves."

Proxy Borrowing

Proxy borrowing is a service we offer faculty members who would like to send their student assistants to the Library to check out material on the faculty member's account. In order for the library to allow a student to check out items for the faculty member, we need written permission to borrow on file. If you would like your students to check out Lavery Library items or pick up your Interlibrary loan items for you, please contact Stacy Celata, Circulation Coordinator, or come to the Library Checkout Desk to fill out a form. Permissions must be renewed yearly.

Interlibrary Services

Interlibrary Loan

No single library can meet all the information needs of today's researcher. As a member of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) and RRLC (Rochester Regional Library Council), the Lavery Library is connected to consortia of libraries which freely lend and borrow materials for their patrons. Daily delivery within the RRLC region and online delivery of articles expedite requests. ILL requests are made using your ILL account. If you have questions, please see our ILL Subject Guide or contact the ILL Office at (585) 385-8106 or email

Nazareth/St. John Fisher College Access Program

In order to provide the best possible library service to all our students and faculty, Nazareth College and St. John Fisher College implemented a direct-access cooperative borrowing program in 1988. Students and faculty from either school may directly check out materials from the other college's library. The relatively close locations and complementary library collections make this a successful option for undergraduate students of both schools.

RRLC Access Cards

Undergraduate students, Graduate students and faculty may borrow materials from many other college and research libraries in the Rochester area by obtaining an RRLC Access Card.

The program is sponsored by the Rochester Regional Library Council. Find more information and a list of all participating libraries on RRLC Access Card Program page. For more information on obtaining an Access Card visit our RRLC Access Card Informational Guide.

Library Lockers

Please check out a lock from the Checkout Desk.

As there are a limited number of lockers available, some restrictions apply to ensure equity among locker users. Please make every effort to abide by the following rules:

  • Lockers are made available exclusively for Fisher patron use. A valid Fisher ID is required.
  • Lockers are first-come, first-serve. Limit one locker per person.
  • The locker loan period is one semester. Please stop by the Checkout Desk or call (585) 385-8165 for more information.
  • Personal locks are not permitted. Any locks other than Lavery Library locks will be removed, and locker contents will be moved to the Checkout Desk. You will be charged a $35 lock cutting fee. After 24 hours, personal belongings will be turned over to Campus Safety & Security.
  • Check out any Library material to your account before storing them in a locker. Materials that may not be checked out (journals, magazines, reference books, etc.) may not be kept in lockers.
  • The Library reserves the right to inspect the contents of lockers at any time.
  • Violations of any of the above policies may result in suspension of locker privileges.

Library SMART Board

The library has a mobile SMART Board that is able to be reserved and used throughout the library by faculty and students.
